I don't see the article count on the Main Page. Could someone who knows this language add the {{NUMBEROFARTICLES}} template (currently showing 5530 articles) to the page in an obvious way (say, bold and linked to Special:Statistics) so someone like me, who doesn't know the language, can still tell it's the article count? Betawiki: better support for your language in MediaWiki

Dear community. I am writing to you to promote a special wiki called Betawiki. This wiki facilitates the localisation (l10n) of the MediaWiki interface. You may have changed many messages here to use your language in the interface, but if you would log in to for example the English language Wiktionary, you would not be able to use the interface as well translated as here. Infact, of the 1798 messages in the core of MediaWiki, 0 messages have been translated. Betawiki also supports the translation of messages of almost 80 extensions, with about 1050 messages.

If you wish to contribute to better support of your language in MediaWiki, as well as for many MediaWiki extensions, please visit Betawiki, create an account and request translator priviledges. You can see the current status of localisation of your language on meta and do not forget to get in touch with others that may already be working on your language on Betawiki.

If you have any further questions, please let me know on my talk page on Betawiki. We will try and assist you as much as possible, for example by importing all messages from a local wiki for you to start with, if you so desire.

Товарищи! Правильное исправление. Правильно для коми пользоваться буквой «кириллическое ӧ» (ru:ӧ):

ӧ, Ӧ

это знаки под номерами U+04E7 и U+04E6 в Юникоде (ru:Юникод); под полем редактирования есть кнопочки для ввода этих знаков.

К сожалению, здесь пока почти везде написано «ö» из латиницы (ru:ö, «o умлаут») — U+00F6, U+00D6.

Чем раньше избавляться от «ö» из латиницы, тем проще это сделать! (Меньше перепроверять.) Так что предлагаю начать использовать кириллическое «ӧ» и исправлять на него уже сейчас.

Хорошо бы, конечно, обзавестись и применить техничские средства для перехода на кириллическое «ӧ»:

• бот, который поправит существующие страницы (но надо будет быть внимательным: если где-то речь об о-умлауте, надо не тронуть; можно надеяться, что пока таких страниц-то и нет, за исключением пользовательских страниц, где есть их имена);
• скрипт, который при редакртировании в только что написанном тексте заменит «ö» из латиницы на кириллическое «ӧ» (полезно тем, кто из-за каких-то ограничений его ОС не может сразу набирать кириллическое «ӧ» с клавиатуры, но может быстро набирать «ö» из латиницы);
• раскладки клавиатур с кириллическим «ӧ».

(Но, конечно, самые мучительные замены -- это категории (их нельзя "передвинуть"), а на втором месте наименования статей. (И сообщения интерфейса лучше сразу правильно писать.) Так что можно в первую очередь их пытаться писать "правильно".)

Давайте лучше разберёмся с Вашим компьютером. У Вас стоит хоть один шрифт, в котором заполнены позиции U+04E6, U+04E7?

• Если нет, я подыщу такие шрифты, укажу их, чтобы Вы могли их поставить (и все остальные читающие на коми тоже).
• Если такие шрифты у Вас стоят, тогда следующим шагом будет понять, почему они не используются, а вместо этих знаков Вы видите квадратики. Comrades! That's an instance of a right correction. It's right to use the letter «Cyrillic ӧ» (en:ӧ) for writing Komi:

these are the characters with numbers U+04E7 and U+04E6 in Unicode (en:Unicode); there are already buttons for entering these characters under the editing field.

Unfortunately, here, Latin «ö» (en:ö, «o Umlaut») — U+00F6, U+00D6 — is written almost everywhere.

The earlier we engage in substituting the wrong Latin «ö»s, the easier this task will be to be made! (Because there are less pages to check for correctly made substitutions.) So I suggest to start using the correct Cyrillic «ӧ» and replacing the wrong character straightaway now.

Surely, it would be nice to have and to use corresponding technical means for the transition to the Cyrillic «ӧ»:

• a bot which would correct the existing pages (but this should be done with care: if a page talks about o-Umlaut, it shouldn't get substituted; hopefully, there no such pages yet, except for users' pages with their names);
• a script that would substitute the Cyrillic «ӧ» for the Latin «ö»s in the just written text in the editing field (this could be useful for those editors who are not able to type Cyrillic «ӧ» quickly because of possibly some limitations of their OS, but who are still able to type the Latin «ö» quickly);
• keyboard layouts with the Cyrillic «ӧ».

В Windows Vista (последней ОС Microsoft) большинство стандартных шрифтов уже содержат и І, и Ӧ. С течением времени таких шрифтов будет всё больше и больше. Но, поскольку не все используют последние версии операционных систем, то проблема пока есть. Решение же её очень просто: пропишите в MediaWiki:Monobook.css шрифтами по умолчанию Юникодовские шрифты, которые уже сейчас есть на большинстве персональных компьютеров, например Arial Unicode MS. «С течением времени» — хорошая оговорка. Мне кажется, что надо делать раздел с прицелом на удобство пользование и на отображение символов без дополнительных настроек. В сегодняшних условиях это значит — латинский умляут и латинская i. Сделать автозамену можно в лучшие времена роботом за пару суток, а сейчас лучше этот запал направить на создание собственно статей и служебных вещей вроде базовых категорий, списков обязательных статей и всего такого. — Amikeco 18:23, 18 моз 2008 (UTC)

На осетинском, например, языке опубликовано довольно много текстов на различных сайтах в сети — практически без исключений везде используется латинская лигатура Æ (и замечательно, потому что тексты читаются без „бубнов“, сразу), в некоторых местах ещё перебитый шрифт с буквой Æ на месте русской Ё (что, конечно, очень неграмотно и требует установки конкретного перебитого шрифта). И практически нигде не встретишь кириллическую Æ — на этом фоне перевод осетинского раздела Википедии на „свою“ орфографию был бы сродни „оригинальному исследованию“ :) Amikeco 18:18, 19 моз 2008 (UTC)

что делать пользователям

Я чаще всего выхожу с рабочего компьютера, а установка чего бы то ни было на нём прерогатива нашего сисадмина. Но в принципе не во мне дело, а в большинстве пользователей. Для заходящих пользователей хорошо бы нам выработать чёткие описание состояния поддержки коми письменности в разных ОС+браузерах и инструкцию для них, как её добиться. Например, в хинди википедии есть такая: hi:विकिपीडिया:Devanagari Help, и ссылка на неё висит на всех страницах всегда сверху (пока ты её сам не спрячешь).

А если Вам помогают изменения CSS, значит, шрифты, достаточные для коми, у Вас всё-таки стоят, но не очень хорошо с ними работает браузер.--Imz 20:55, 17 моз 2008 (UTC)

Bot policy

Hello. To facilitate steward granting of bot access, I suggest implementing the standard bot policy on this wiki. In particular, this policy allows stewards to automatically flag known interlanguage linking bots (if this page says that is acceptable), which form the vast majority of such requests. The policy also enables global bots on this wiki (if this page says that is acceptable), which are trusted bots that will be given bot access on every wiki that allows global bots.

This policy makes bot access requesting much easier for local users, operators, and stewards. To implement it we only need to create a redirect to this page from Project:Bot policy, and add a line at the top noting that it is used here. Please read the text at m:Bot policy before commenting. If you object, please say so; I hope to implement in one week if there is no objection, since it is particularly written to streamline bot requests on wikis with little or no community interested in bot access requests. The LocalisationUpdate extension has gone live

The LocalisationUpdate extension is now enabled for all Wikimedia projects. From now on new localisations that become available in SVN will become available to your project within 24 hours. Your localisations get into SVN from translatewiki.net typically within a day and at worst in two days. This is a huge improvement from the old practice where the localisations became available with new software. This could take weeks, even months.

The localisations done by our community at translatewiki.net are committed to SVN typically every day. When the system messages in English are the same as the local messages, they will now be inserted in a file and are available for use in all our projects in a timely manner

What this means for you

Local messages have an impact on the performance of our system. It is best when messages are as much as possible part of the system messages. In order to remove unnecessary duplication, all the messages that have a local localisation and are exactly the same as the system message will be removed. What we ask you to do is to compare and proof read the messages in translatewiki.net and the local messages. You can then either remove local messages when the translatewiki.net message is to be preferred or, you can update the message at translatewiki.net.

Messages that are specific to your project will have to stay as they are. You do want to check if the format and the variables of the message are still the same.

Why localise at translatewiki.net

When you localise at translatewiki.net, your messages will be used in all Wikimedia projects and eventually in all MediaWiki based projects. This is how we provide the standard support for your language. When messages change, at translatewiki.net you will be prompted to revisit your translations. Localising is more efficient because we have innovated the process to make you more efficient; there is text explaining about messages and we have applied AJAX technology to reduce the number of clicks you have to make.

How can we improve the usability for your language

We expect that with the implementation of LocalisationUpdate the usability of MediaWiki for your language will improve. We are now ready to look at other aspects of usability for your language as well. There are two questions we would like you to answer: Are there issues with the new functionality of the Usability Initiative Does MediaWiki support your language properly

The best way to answer the first question is to visit the translatewiki.net. Change the language to your language, select the “vector” skin and add the advanced tool bar in in the preferences and check out the new functionality. And make some changes in your user page. When there is a need to improve on the localisation, please make the necessary changess . It should update your localisation straight away. We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Usability_issues.

When there are problems with the support of MediaWiki for your language, we really want to know about this. It is best to report each issue separately. In this way there will be no large mass of issues to resolve but we can address each issue on its own. Consider issues with the display of characters, the presentation of your script, the position of the side bar, the combination of text with other languages, scripts. It is best to try this in an environment like the prototype wiki as it provides you with a clean, basic and up to date environment. The prototype wiki is available for five languages but you can select any of them, change the preferences to your language and test out MediaWiki for your language.

We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Language_issues. The issues you raise will all be assessed. It is important to keep each issue separate, because this will make it easier to understand the issues and find solutions.
